Update on our Working Dogs

Just an update on our working dogs.

Calais, although living with my mother, is still working on his agility titles and will be showing in the late summer for the advanced classes in Agility.  He has learned to work distance and is really getting comfortable in his working venue.

Chaos is training agility with Margaret Reitmeyer and is striding in leaps and bounds….He is also working with John Soares and myself for preparation of a possible SchH I Title in the fall.

Quen is working with me along with a couple of well know trainers, to get ready for  his BH in the fall..and possibly SchHI thereafter.  He is an awesome dog to work, showing great food drive, prey and super fast ball drive.  He comes fast to the sleeve, hits hard, and is clear in the head.

Emma is enjoying semi-retirement with some agility shows scheduled for the late summer.

Boreas is still head master of the house…holding his own and I enjoy every day we have.

It is sad to say but Maggie and Irish are no longer living in our residence.  We wish them both the best in their future hunting careers and endevors.. They will be missed.

As for our training, classes are in sesson right now for Winter II and Spring will start up at the end of April…please look for our upcoming schedule by Mid April as well as our announcement of the reactivation of the Basking Ridge Obedience classes in the Spring.

Thank you,

The Staff at Puppy-Wuppy Dog Training

Rich takes 5th place out of 25 dogs at the Dog Hunt Challenge

After many years of hunting and training my dogs,  I decided to see were I stacked up against some of the best from around the country. So,Lori, Irish, and I headed out at 3am Saturday, drove 4hrs to Port Matilda,Pa to run in Lion Country’s Supply Bird Dog Challenge.

Lion Country is the biggest bird dog supplier in the country. Many of the top trainers were on hand giving seminars as well as demos. There were plenty of vendors, including Bennelli, who had Tim Bradley representing them.  Tim did his trick shooting show that left me in awe ! I’m goning to try and shoot some birds from behind my head and with the gun upside down this hunting season. Those of you that hunt with me watch out! I tried to impress Tim with my shooting skills at the stand were he let you shoot their line of guns, bad mistake! I proceeded to miss 4 clays in a row! What an ass!! He told me if I came to the Tuckerton duck show later this month he’d let me redeem myself. I think I’m might stay home!

Now onto the challenge.  We arrived at the game farm that hosted the challenge around 8am, we notice the parking lot filled with cars from all around the country with there fancy crates and trailers with names on the trucks like Wild Wing Kennels, Kisseme kennels, Point shoot retrieve kennels, and the only person from New
Jersey ME! What did I get myself into!?!

Lori kept asking all week and that morning “you nervous” I thought nervous to go hunting? No way I’m excited! All kinds of dogs were present Gsp’s, English pointers ,setters, Brittany’s you name it they had it.
First thing I did was find a judge to explain the rules and scoring process and after 15 minutes of that my head was spinning! This is definitely a sport where strategy plays a huge part as well as experience. Well experience???  I had none!  Mmy first rodeo here, strategy? Shoot, don’t miss, and let Irish do the work!!  Yeah that should work!
It was awful hot and humid which was not great hunting weather or for the dogs, terrible scenting conditions, and the cover! thick thick thick! once the dog was 20 yards out  you lost them. Irish and I get called to the line, I decide to put Irish’s beeper collar on, as I was the only one to do this it turned out to be a great decision. We had 20 minutes to find 4 birds and only 8 shells to shoot, getting points for the find, the point,  the harvest, and the retrieve. The first 10 minutes we hunted Irish found no birds, now I’m nervous …..What the hell!!   So, I decided to let Irish hunt
further out than normal which I could do since I put on her beeper, out of sight I had to trust her. well she didn’t disappoint beep beep beep she’s on point! I walked up flushed the chukar it flies behind me I snapped off a shot, I missed!  quickly I recovered and knocked it down on the second shoot We proceeded to find 3  more birds
in record time one right after the other and we finished with 5 minutes remaining! Irish truly  was on, showing off, and showing up the other dogs! I was very proud as we placed and took 5th with only 10 points separating us from 1st place. Not that 1st is important, but we will be back next year.   Irish, as well as Maggy, to  take 1st and
2nd!!

Agility weekend at Dream Park was lots of fun and all the dogs did well bringing home another leg towards their titles….Here’s a run down of how they did.

Saturday:  Maggie and Cali qualified in Jumpers and Weaves earning a leg each toward their title.  Maggie Took 1st place in 16″ and Cali took 2nd place in 20″.

Sunday: Emma, Cali, and Maggie all qualified in Novice Standard Preferred earning a leg toward their title…  Emma took 1st in 20″, followed by Cali for 2nd.  Maggie took first in 16″  class.    In JWW, Emma took 1st place in the 20″ class earning her first leg in Jumpers.

We are getting there.  Dogs have much better time on Sunday, much more settled in and relaxed. The judges were great.  Really enjoyed their classes.
